    Assistant Superintendent for Student Services 
    Non-Represented COA – 12-month position
    Lawrence Township Public Schools seek an accomplished and innovative educational leader to serve as the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services. The Assistant Superintendent for Student Services will be responsible for providing leadership and supervision of programs and personnel assigned to meet the individualized needs of students and working collaboratively with families, outside organizations, and educational agencies to form viable partnerships for the support and development of students.

    School Administrator Standard certification OR Certificate of Eligibility

    1. New Jersey School Administrator (0101) standard certificate or certificate of eligibility required
    2. Prior experience as a central office administrator and/or building principal preferred
    3. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to motivate people
    4. Strong understanding of current educational research
    5. Knowledge and understanding of special education programs and services, curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning
    6. Knowledge and understanding of the regulations regarding the operation of special education programs, including those outlined in N.J.A.C.
    7. Demonstrated leadership skills with programs and people
    8. Demonstrated ability to relate well with students, staff, parents, and the community

    REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools
    Supervisors of Special Education/Child Study Teams, Supervisor of Guidance, Home Instructors, Special Education Teachers, Preschool Teachers, Special Education Instructional Assistants, Child Study Team Members, Speech Language Therapists, Behavioral Specialists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, and Nurses.
    JOB GOAL:   
    To develop, direct, and supervise all district efforts regarding child study team services, related services, special education, guidance, nursing/health services, home instruction, and preschool.

    1. Develop implement and maintain suitable organizational structure, operating systems, reporting practices, and procedures related to the programs listed above.
    2. Assess program needs in the areas listed above and recommend needed additions and modifications.
    3. Develop structures to ensure continuity among schools and articulation between levels for programs listed above.
    4. Establish and promote high standards and expectations for students and staff for academic performance and responsibility for behavior.
    5. Coordinate, administer, and schedule services and procedures for referrals from I&RS Committees. Ensure that students who are educationally handicapped are evaluated, classified and placed in the least restrictive individualized educational program by the Child Study Team, as required by N.J.A.C. and other State mandates and guidelines.
    6. Represent the Board in mediation, administrative hearings, and court proceedings relating to students in need of or receiving special services when requested.
    7. Supervise and evaluate the certified child study team and related services staff, the support staff assigned to the department of student services, special education supervisors and the guidance administrator.
    8. Assess program needs and provide for in-service activities appropriate for staff in the programs listed above.
    9. Provide and coordinate assistance to staff in the regular programs of the district to assist them with classified students or with students who are experiencing difficulty.
    10. Provide opportunities for effective staff development that address the needs of the staff, including workshops, conferences, visitations, demonstration lessons, and sessions in which the staff share successful practices and strategies.
    11. Oversee the development and control of the operating budgets for those programs listed above.
    12. Interpret the goals of the programs listed above for district staff and community at large.
    13. Recruit, select, and place candidates for positions within assigned areas of responsibility.
    14. Seek input from building principals on the performance of child study team members and specialists.
    15. Provide input to building principals on the performance of certified staff in the areas of guidance, health services, and special education.
    16. Maintain a special education parent advisory council.
    17. Prepare and/or oversee preparation of state and local reports and proposals for agency funding as required.
    18. Recommend the number, type, and location of special education program/services.
    19. Provide input to principals on roster sizes and teacher assignments of special education staff.
    20. Acts as district liaison to local, state, and federal authorities and agencies in the program areas listed above and for DCP&P, the homeless, and Section 504.
    21. Maintain compliance in regards to state and federal regulations, including special education facilities approval.
    22. Collect and analyze data, particularly State assessments, regarding the achievement of classified students and other pertinent information affecting the design and implementation of services and programs, using the information to recommend new programs and modifications in existing programs. Share with staff the results of State and other assessments.
    23. Establish a professional rapport with students and staff that earns their respect, maintaining visibility with students, staff, parents, and the community. Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies.
    24. Communicate regularly with the Superintendent of Schools and with the principals about the needs, successes, and general operation of the various programs and services.
    25. Recommend policies and procedures to promote a healthy and supportive climate of learning that addresses the most recently adopted state standards for educational programs and responsibility for behavior.
    26. Continue to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and professional growth experiences. Summarize, interpret, and disseminate current developments in special education and related services through reading of professional journals, participation in professional development, and involvement in professional organizations.
    27. Serve as a key member of the Central Office Administrators (COA) team.
    28. Assume responsibility for continued professional growth by attending workshops, maintaining membership in professional organizations, and reading professional journals or publications.
    29. Perform other tasks and assume other duties as designated by the Superintendent of Schools.
